(01-14) 15:42 PST SAN FRANCISCO -- San Francisco police asked for the public's help Monday in identifying a suspect in an attempted sexual assault in the Mission District.
Investigators said they believe the man depicted in a police sketch released Monday attacked a 31-year-old San Francisco woman as she was walking on 23rd Street near San Jose Avenue at about 2:40 a.m. Jan. 6.
The woman told officers that the man had stared at her as he approached. Then he lunged at her, grabbed her by the head and threw her to the pavement, according to police. He straddled her and slammed her head against the ground.
The woman fought back, freed herself and screamed for help. A resident yelled at the attacker to leave the woman alone, and the assailant fled east on 23rd toward Valencia Street, police said.
The woman has been circulating an e-mail to Mission District groups and blogs, warning residents to be on alert.
She said she had been attacked as she walked home from a friend's potluck, according to the e-mail reprinted on the Mission Mission blog.
The woman said the man seemed to know "what he was doing and how to attack someone," and had tried at first to put his thumb in her eye socket. He pinned her arms to her sides with his legs and used his other hand to grip her jaw to stifle her screams, she wrote.
The woman said she had suffered a bruise around her eye, scratches on her face, scrapes on her shoulder and a sore back, ribs and jaw.
"It could have been significantly worse," she said.
Police classify the incident as an attempted sexual assault because the man did not try to rob the woman and had no other motive for the attack, said Officer Albie Esparza, a department spokesman. The woman also believed that was his intention when he straddled her, Esparza said.
Investigators described the suspect as Asian or Latino, about 25 years old. He was about 5-foot-10 and weighed about 160 pounds, with a buzz haircut and stubble on his face. He was wearing a dark, hooded shirt and dark pants.
Anyone with any information can call an anonymous tip line at (415) 575-4444, or text a tip to TIP411 with "SFPD" at the beginning of the message.
