Brazil ( Suspects in the murder of a young boy - All found dead )

SAO PAULO – Four of the five suspects in the murder of a Bolivian boy during a robbery just over two months ago in Sao Paulo are dead, police in Brazil’s largest city confirmed Thursday.

Two of the suspects were found dead of poisoning last month inside a jail, while the other two were killed in early July though their bodies were only identified this week through fingerprint analysis, according to Sao Paulo’s Public Safety Secretariat.

After confirming the day before that Wesley Soares Pedroso, 19, had been found dead of a gunshot to the head on July 7, a week after the boy’s death, the police said Thursday that Diego Freitas Campos, 20, was found slain that same day but had only now been identified.

Freitas Campos was accused of firing the gunshot that killed 5-year-old Brayan Yanarico Capcha when the boy was in his father’s arms, apparently because he would not stop crying.

Of the five suspects in the murder case, a jailed teenager is the only one still alive.

Press accounts say police suspect Soares Pedroso and Freitas Campos were killed by members of the First Capital Command, Sao Paulo’s largest criminal gang.

Their bodies were found dumped in different fields in Jardim Corisco, a poor neighborhood on Sao Paulo’s north side.

The bodies were found within a span of 12 hours, but police did not initially link the homicides because one of the men was found with single gunshot to the head and the other with a dozen bullet wounds in different parts of his body.

Paulo Ricardo Martins and Felipe dos Santos Lima, the other two suspects in the child murder, were found dead in the cell they shared at a jail in greater Sao Paulo.

The autopsy showed they had died after ingesting the so-called “cocktail of death,” a mixture of alcohol, cocaine, Viagra and other drugs.

The family of the slain boy had arrived in Sao Paulo just months before the crime to work in the garment industry, but they decided to return to Bolivia after his death. EFE

Mexico ( Gunman Kills Leftist Politician while eating dinner in Southern Mexico )

MEXICO CITY – An Oaxaca state legislator, who was also a teacher and mayor-elect of the city of San Andres Cabecera Nueva, was gunned down while eating at a restaurant, Mexican prosecutors said Wednesday.

Everardo Hugo Hernandez Guzman, a member of the leftist Party of the Democratic Revolution, or PRD, was killed by a lone gunman who “shot him twice in the head and arm,” the Oaxaca Attorney General’s Office said.

The 53-year-old Hernandez Guzman was murdered around 10:40 p.m. as he was dining at a restaurant in the city of Santa Cruz Xoxocotlan, the AG’s office said.

Investigators found two bullet casings from a 9 mm weapon at the crime scene.

The PRD’s spokesman in Oaxaca, Fidel Ernesto Lopez Nelio, condemned the murder in a Twitter posting and said the leftist party and the state legislature “lost a comrade who was reliable, important and loyal to his convictions.”

Oaxaca Gov. Gabino Cue also condemned Hernandez Guzman’s killing and vowed to investigate the case “fully and to bring those responsible to justice.”

Investigators have “not ruled out any line of investigation,” the AG’s office said. EFE

New York, September 10, 2013--An Indian journalist was killed late Saturday while covering clashes between Hindus and Muslims that erupted in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, according to news reports.
"Authorities must ensure this killing is thoroughly investigated and hold the individuals responsible to account," said Bob Dietz, CPJ's Asia program coordinator. "This case is yet another reminder of the dangers that journalists face while covering unrest in India."
Unidentified assailants fatally shot Rajesh Verma, a part-time stringer for the TV news channel IBN 7, in the chest while he was covering confrontations between Hindus and Muslims in the small city of Muzaffarnagar, according to Ajesh Mohan, senior assistant editor at IBN 7, and local news reports. Mohan said Verma had worked for the station for about five years.
Indian officials said they had not been able to identify the perpetrator and that they were investigating the fatality.
Saturday's clashes erupted following police dispersal of a meeting by thousands of Hindu farmers calling for justice in last month's killings of two Hindu men, according to The New York Times. The victims were believed to have been killed by Muslims, news reports said. Officials said that the clashes were also fueled by a false video circulated last week that purportedly showed the two men being lynched. At least 28 people were killed and more than 90 individuals arrested in the violence, which spread to neighboring villages over the next two days, police said.
Last month, CPJ reported on a journalist murder in Uttar Pradesh state. CPJ research shows that at least 29 journalists have been killed in direct relation to their work in India since the organization began keeping records in 1992. With six unsolved journalist murders in the past 10 years, India ranked 12th on CPJ's 2013 Impunity Index, which spotlights countries where journalists are murdered regularly and killers go free.
