SAN JOSE – A 28-year-old Mexican flight attendant was arrested in Costa Rica with $160,000 she was carrying attached to her body, the Security Ministry said.
The woman was arrested Wednesday night in a taxi that was transporting her to a hotel in San Jose after she had arrived in Costa Rica from Mexico as a passenger on a flight.
“It is important to point out that the woman was not working, but rather came as a passenger on a flight of the airline she works for and, despite that, she was wearing a flight attendant uniform, which reveals her interest in fooling the authorities,” the ministry said in a statement.
The police made routine checks at the exit of the Juan Santamaria Airport, located on the outskirts of San Jose, and noted “a certain nervousness in the woman” that aroused their suspicions.
The officials seized the woman and found a body belt fastened to her body at waist level in which she was carrying rolls of $100 bills totaling $160,000.
Another thing that aroused the suspicion of the police was that the woman was traveling alone, something that “is not normal among the flight crews,” said the Security Ministry.
The official said that the flight attendant worked for Aeromexico.
The woman could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted. EFE
