TUCSON - A former Tucson Police Department officer is in custody of the Pima County Jail facing 2 counts of Aggravated Assault, according to officials.
Kyle McCartin, 23, was fired from the Tucson Police Department following his arrest Tuesday morning, according to Tucson Police Department spokesman Sgt. Chris Widmer.
The incident began when the Pima County Sheriff's Department was called to the Giant Gas Station, located on Sunrise Drive near Kolb Road, for reports of an assault with a deadly weapon, according to Pima County Sheriff's Department spokesman Deputy Jesus Banuelos.
The store clerk told deputies that 2 men went into the store wearing bullet proof vests and seemed very intoxicated, Banuelos said.
During the sales transaction, one of the men, identified as McCartin, pulled out a handgun and pointed it at the clerk, Banuelos added. The other man told McCartin to put the gun away, but he pointed it at the clerk again.
Both men were gone before deputies arrived, Banuelos said.
Deputies searched the area and both men were found a short time later at a nearby apartment complex, Banuelos said.
McCartin never demanded anything from the clerk during the incident, Banuelos added.
Tucson Police Department has launched an Internal Affairs investigation, and as a result, McCartin was fired Tuesday morning, Widmer said.
McCartin was hired by the Tucson Police Department in September 2012 and was on a probationary status with the department due to his tenure with the agency, Widmer said.
