TUCSON- A Tucson attorney is representing a woman believed to be a key player in the drug world in Colombia and Mexico. Steve Ralls has been in business three decades and has had numerous high profile clients. Now he can add, Sandra Avila Beltran known as, "La Reina del Pacifico" or the Queen of the Pacific.
There's a book, and even a narco corrido, or drug ballad about her.
Retired U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agent Anthony Coulson says, "She was a main connection for the Sinaloan Cartel in terms of establishing and solidifying relationships with the Colombian cocaine suppliers."
She was arrested in Mexico five years ago, and charged with smuggling 10 tons of cocaine. A Mexican judge dropped those charges saying there was insufficient evidence against her.
Then last August she was extradited to the United States, on charges of conspiracy to distribute 220 pounds of cocaine.
She is currently sitting in prison in Miami, Florida. Her attorney says, "We've had relatively good degree of successes representing individuals, beyond that I can't really say why she came to us but she did."
Ralls a former law enforcement officer, including being a DEA agent says he doesn't buy into the hype of "La Reina's" reputation. "Most of what has been generated concerning what the agents are saying is really a repetition of a lot of the gossip that exists," he says.
He says the media has also perpetuated the legend of "La Reina del Pacifico" and her alleged drug connections. "She may know individuals that are involved in drug trafficking its probably very true, that she has participated in that is a whole different story."
Both of Beltran's husbands were former police commanders who became drug traffickers and were assassinated.
Her uncle is in prison for the murder of a DEA agent. Her teenage son was kidnapped and held for a $12-million ransom. It's reported she paid it.
Former DEA agent Coulson says, "Sandra Beltran is a very ruthless person who my information is that never hesitated to give the order to have someone killed."
Her attorney says, "I dispute that she is ruthless and dispute everything else. She is a very decent person."
A jury will make their decision in March on the future of La Reina del Pacifico.

Man charged after kittens found in freezer
The Associated Press
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- A Tampa Bay area man faces charges after authorities say a visitor found four kittens - one of which was dead - in his freezer.
The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office reports that 38-year-old Rodney Blanchard asked a friend to get a beer out of his freezer Sunday. Instead of beer, the friend said she found kittens in individual sandwich bags. When the friend tried to remove the kittens, she said Blanchard made her leave. That's when she contacted authorities.
Deputies reported finding three orange and white males, which were still alive, and a dead, calico female. They were approximately six weeks old.
The surviving kittens were taken to a local animal hospital. Officials also removed an adult cat from the home.
Blanchard was charged with four counts of animal cruelty and one count of misdemeanor battery. He was being held on $8,500 bail

SINGAPORE ( Man goes on STRIKE over job- Gets 6 weeks in prison ) No justice
SINGAPORE (AP) — Singapore sentenced a
Chinese immigrant bus driver to six weeks in prison Monday for his involvement
in the city-state's first
labor strike in 26 years.
Pushing for the jail term as a deterrent,
the prosecution argued in court that although Bao Feng Shan, 38, was not an instigator of
the strike, he was "far from a mere passive participant."
The prosecution said a lenient approach may encourage others to think that
they can commit similar offences and "conveniently express remorse to escape
custodial sentence."
A total of 171 Chinese bus drivers went on
strike last Monday in protest at being paid nearly a quarter less than Malaysian
bus drivers who work for the same transport company.
More than half continued to protest on
Tuesday but the strike was over by Wednesday. It disrupted about 5 percent of
the city-state's bus services.
Walking off the job in protest is almost
unheard of in Singapore, which requires essential service workers such as bus
drivers to give 14 days' notice of a strike. The last strike was in 1986 by
shipyard workers.
Bo was one of five bus drivers charged for
involvement in the strike. The other four are scheduled to appear in court on
Thursday and are currently being held at the central police station.
If convicted, they can be fined up to
$2,000 and sentenced to up to a year in prison.
On Sunday, 29 other drivers had their
permits revoked and were deported to China. The government said a police
investigation found that the strike was premeditated and that the drivers had
been absent from work without reason.
Others involved in the unrest will be
issued warnings but no further action will be taken and they will be allowed to
remain and work in the country.
Singapore relies on hundreds of thousands
of immigrants from countries such as Indonesia, Bangladesh and China to work as
maids, construction workers and at other jobs deemed unappealing by many
locals.
TUCSON Az ( Awarded 65 million contract- Raytheon Air to ground Missile ) JAGM-multi-billion dollar program
Tucson-based Raytheon Missile Systems has been awarded a $65 million contract to continue development of the nation’s next-generation air-to-ground missile.
Raytheon is in a competition with Lockheed martin to develop and produce the Joint Air-to-Ground Missile (JAGM), a potentially multi-billion-dollar program to replace three older missiles. The Army-led program was nearly canceled amid Pentagon budget-cutting but instead has been put on an extended development track.
Raytheon’s contract award by the Army Aviation Missile Command was expected, since Lockheed Martin was awarded a similar contract worth $64 million in August.
Raytheon said that under the contract for “continued technology development," the company will develop and deliver a next-generation guidance section for the JAGM, with four months devoted to updating its design and a preliminary review, followed by two years for a critical design review, guidance section qualification and testing, and delivery of JAGM guidance sections

THE 2013 NASCAR Chevrolet SS race car -unveiled in Vegas
Related Gallery2013 NASCAR Chevrolet SS
As a throwback Las Vegas magician might say while whipping the sheet of his latest trick, "Alakazam!" The 2013 NASCAR Chevrolet SS race car has just been unveiled in Vegas and these are the first images. It will campaign in the top-tier Sprint Cup series next year, replacing the Impala nameplate that has done 12 years in stock car racing over two stints, the most recent from 2007 to the end of this year's season.
There are more hopes resting on the bulging wheel arches of the NASCAR SS than race wins. True, even though it's powered by a small-block Chevrolet V8, its Car of Tomorrow architecture means it bears little actual connection to the coming SS production sedan. But there's every hope the race car can provide an oval-tested halo for that road car, the latter being the first Chevrolet sedan in 17 years to be rear-wheel drive.
Chevrolet says that a "limited production version" of the SS will hit dealer showrooms late next year as a 2014-model-year sedan. Before that, the NASCAR SS will debut at next year's Daytona Speed Week that runs from February 16-23. Supposedly during that week, on February 21, the production car will be revealed, too – the same day as the next-generation Holden Commodore, which birthed the SS, is being revealed in Australia.
There's a press release below with a bit more info, and we'll be bringing you live images and more details on the long awaited Bowtie racer soon.
TUCSON Az ( Tucson Police take 2 hours to respond to 5 -911 calls)
It took police 2 1/2 hours to respond to five frantic 911 calls from a midtown library where a fight involving four boys broke out in the parking lot before spilling inside the library.
No library patrons or staff were injured, but the facility was locked down for 45 minutes once the boys left, while staff members tried to get police to respond.
Tucson Police Department officials declined to comment until they have time to research what happened.
The incident started at about 4 p.m. Wednesday, when four teenage boys began fighting in the parking lot of the Martha Cooper Library, 1377 N. Catalina Ave.
"Library staff, because of this disorderly conduct situation, contacted 911," said Pima County Public Library spokeswoman Kenya Johnson.
The fight eventually made its way into the library.
The fistfight stopped for a while, but threats and other unruly behavior continued, Johnson said.
"They were still being disruptive. They were being just intimidating. ... They weren't engaging with patrons, but they were still engaging each other," she said.
Library staff also kept calling 911.
After about 45 minutes, the group left the building. Library staff members then locked the doors behind them.
"It was a preventative measure to make sure that their activity didn't put any patrons or staff into harm's way," she said.
Johnson said doors stayed locked for about 45 minutes until they determined it was safe to reopen.
During the approximately 90-minute incident, library staff members called 911 five times, according to Johnson.
No one from TPD arrived at the library until about an hour after the library reopened the doors, she said.
County Administrator Chuck Huckelberry said there have been 911 response issues in the past, but those have been resolved.
As for this incident, he said both sides will have to examine what went wrong and how to prevent a recurrence.
"Everybody wants to take a look at what happened and how to fix it," Huckelberry said. "We just have to redouble our efforts to make sure this doesn't happen again."
For instance, the phone lines at Martha Cooper Library were showing up on the 911 dispatcher's screen with the main library name and address, and that needs to be addressed, Huckelberry said.
"We just want for our employees to be safe and our patrons to be safe," he said.
Huckelberry said the county experienced a spike in 911 calls from libraries when it took control over the entire library system a few years ago. Most of the calls came from libraries within the city.
In the past six months, 149 emergency 911 calls were made from the 27-branch library system.

SAN FRANCISCO ( Asian woman takes on burglar with Bear spray and wooden Samurai sword )
Sick and tired of a burglar stealing packages from homes in her neighborhood, a San Francisco woman took matters into her own hands on Tuesday, according to the Daily Mail.
Luring the thief with a dummy package, Sonya Yu sprayed him with bear repellent and threatened him with a wooden sword, chasing him away. Minutes later, the alleged burglar, Andy Anduha, 51, was apprehended by law enforcement.
Protect your home from theft this holiday season
Yu, a photographer, recounted the entire incident on her Twitter account as events unfolded.
Yu informed her followers that several items had been stolen by Anduha. "He steals packages from door stoops - stole $1K+ worth from us earlier in the fall. He's been targeting our neighborhood."
"My bear spray, bokken, & I are still not intimidated,'" she tweeted Tuesday at 2:10 p.m. A bokken is a wooden sword used for samurai training.
Shortly after 4:45 p.m. the same day she tweeted, "I GOT HIM WITH THE BEAR SPRAY BUT HE ESCAPED." Then, less than 15 minutes later, "I AM PUTTING HIM UNDER CITIZENS ARREST RIGHT NOW WITH 4 COPS."
Constant tweets concerned for her welfare came in. Yu kept her followers informed, giving them a blow-by-blow of events. Less than three minutes later: "8 COPS HAVE HIM & I JUST CONFIRMED ID. HE IS BEIN TAKEN AWAY IN AN AMBULANCE CUZ OF THE BEAR SPRAY I DOUSED HIM WITH." After Anduha was apprehended she wrote, "The bear spray debilitated him & painted him orange so other cops picked him up within 5 minutes. GOT HIM!"
Yu conceded on Twitter that the police were entertained by her unorthodox methods. "Cops were cracking up when they arrived to see me and my weapons." Hikers and hunters use bear repellent for protection. Yu tweeted she had purchased it at a local REI. Like pepper spray, bear repellent contains "Capsaicin and other Capsaicinoids, red pepper derivatives that affect the eyes and respiratory system," according to REI's website.

PHOENIX Az ( MOTHER Wanted - 11 yr old girl might DIE ) Removed from hospital
Police in Phoenix are searching for an 11-year-old girl who was removed from the hospital by her mother, where she was being treated for leukemia and still has a catheter in her chest.
Police said the little girl, who has been only been identified as Emily, also had her arm amputated due to an infection. The authorities are not sure why the mother removed the child from Phoenix Children's Hospital on Wednesday night, but are worried about the catheter still in Emily's chest.
The longest walk ( would you look the other way so she could go home and die) ?
"Our concern right now is for that catheter to be medically removed. We understand that there is the possibility that the catheter could get an infection and thereby result in the death of this child really in the matter of days," Sgt. Steve Martos told ABC News affiliate KNXV Thursday night.
Surveillance footage from the hospital shows the mother, identified as Norma in a police press release, leaving with Emily around 10:30 p.m. local time Wednesday. Police say Norma removed Emily's IV before walking her out of the hospital in street clothes.
A young boy was also seen leaving with Norma and Emily.
Police believe the family then left the hospital in a black van and have not been seen since. Detectives have made an effort to contact the family but to no avail, according to the statement.
It's not clear how long Emily had been a patient at the hospital. Police have not released the family's last name.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A former NFL player has been sentenced to life in prison for a series of home-invasion robberies and a sexual assault in Sacramento.
Keith Jerome Wright, who is 32, was sentenced Friday in Sacramento County Superior Court to multiple life terms. He was convicted last month of 19 charges that included forcible oral copulation, armed robbery, kidnapping, burglary and false imprisonment.
Prosecutors say DNA evidence and stolen items found in Wright's home connected him to three home invasion robberies in July and August 2011.
The former University of Missouri defensive lineman saw little playing time in the NFL after being selected in the sixth round of the draft by the Houston Texans in 2003. He also was with the Indianapolis Colts, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Detroit Lions.

CASA GRANDE Az ( BOMB blows up back door -Social Security Office )
CASA GRANDE, Ariz. — Authorities are investigating a small explosion that happened at the back entrance of a Social Security Administration office in a small town about 50 miles south of Phoenix.
The explosion was reported just before 8:30 a.m. Friday and no one was injured, Casa Grande Fire Marshal Barbara Rice said.
Television images show the building was blackened around the entry door, but Rice said the damage was not extensive.
The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives sent investigators to the scene. ATF spokesman Tom Mangan said the FBI had taken over the investigation and referred questions to that agency.
Calls to the FBI and Casa Grande police were not immediately returned.
A local resident whose wife works in the office and who talked to one of her co-workers said he was concerned about the staff, even though no one was hurt.
“She was crying and extremely upset,” Ed Mouradian told the Arizona Republic. “I am concerned for all the employees’ well-beings. It’s a small office that’s very tight-knit.”
Casa Grande was once a farming community of a few thousand people but grew into a distant bedroom community for Phoenix when developers began building hundreds of homes in the early 2000s.

FREMONT ( Boyfriend tried to hang girlfriend-but left her with cell phone )
A Fremont man was arrested Sunday after he allegedly tied up his girlfriend and tried to hang her from a tree in his backyard, police said.
The girlfriend called police around 5:50 p.m. from a cell phone and frantically told them she was tied up in the backyard at her boyfriend’s house on the 41500 block of Beatrice Street, said police spokeswoman Geneva Bosques.
The woman’s hands had been zip-tied behind her back but when her boyfriend stepped inside for a cigarette, she was able to reach for her phone in her back pocket and call police, Bosques said. The dispatcher had a hard time hearing her and the woman didn’t say much, but was able to give police the address of the house, Bosques said.
When police arrived at the house, they found her with her hands tied behind her back and a rope tied around her neck and connected to a tree. Her boyfriend, 31-year-old Daniel Howard, was standing behind her when police arrived. He pushed her toward a creek embankment at the edge of the back yard and jumped over a side fence, Bosques said.
Police released the woman, and officers chased down and arrested Howard several houses away. He was booked into Santa Rita Jail on suspicion of attempted murder. The woman, who lives in San Jose, was treated at a hospital for minor injuries.
Police have had contact with Howard numerous times in the past, Bosques said.
