Mexico City ( Nude Cyclists Hit the Streets in Mexico City to Protest Fossil Fuels )

MEXICO CITY – Several hundred nude cyclists took to the streets of Mexico City this weekend to protest excessive use of fossil fuels and call for expanded use of bicycles for transportation.

The cyclists hit the capital’s streets Saturday for World Naked Bike Ride.

The event, which started in Vancouver, Canada, in 2004, has been observed in Mexico since 2006.

Riders wanted to draw attention to the use of fossil fuels, demand respect for cyclists and pedestrians, promote the use of human power and promote individuality, organizers said.

Cyclists rode down the iconic Paseo de la Reforma and then headed down other avenues past the Zocalo, Mexico City’s main plaza, to Plaza Rio de Janeiro.

“Participants organized themselves to protest and raise awareness, promoting the use of the bicycle as a sustainable mode of transportation,” organizers said in a statement.

A similar protest took place in Guadalajara, the capital of the western state of Jalisco, while a naked ride is scheduled for next weekend in Puebla.
