An Irishwoman reported missing by her family was arrested by drug enforcement agents at Lima’s Jorge Chavez International Airport, Peruvian police said Sunday.
The 20-year-old woman, Michaella McCollum Connolly, was arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle five kilos of cocaine out of the South American country.
A 19-year-old British citizen, Melissa Reid, was arrested for allegedly attempting to smuggle six kilos from Peru into Spain.
The two young women were detained last Tuesday when they tried to board a flight to Madrid, a drug enforcement agency spokesman told Efe.
The two women were traveling together and had hidden the cocaine inside containers of food and condiments packed in their suitcases.
McCollum Connolly was reported missing by relatives after they lost contact with her following a trip to the Spanish Mediterranean island of Ibiza.
The Irish Department of Foreign Affairs helped the family search for McCollum Connolly, placing her photograph in European publications.
