BUENOS AIRES – An Argentine judge was detained for his alleged participation in a network promoting sex parties with minors, court sources told Efe on Tuesday.
Juan Bernardi, a criminal court judge in the southern city of Viedma, was detained Monday after the Magistrates Council in the Rio Negro province revoked his immunity from prosecution.
Last week a court ordered the prosecution of Bernardi and Julio Antueque, the caretaker at the judge’s country home.
Bernardi surrendered voluntarily to authorities after he lost his immunity.
Authorities are investigating a network, allegedly involving prominent citizens of Viedma, that recruited minors for sex parties.
The abuses were reported by the mother of a young woman living in a government shelter in Viedma.
The investigation, initiated about seven months ago, indicates that Antueque arranged for a 17-year-old girl to come to the judge’s country residence for prostitution, according to court documents.
If convicted, Bernardi could face up to 18 years in prison.
