U.S. Destroyer Arrives in Poland amid Crisis with Russia

WARSAW – The USS Jason Dunham, a U.S. Navy guided missile destroyer, arrived in Poland on Wednesday as symbol of the United States’ commitment to NATO member Poland’s security, according to a statement from the U.S. embassy in Warsaw.

“The USS Jason Dunham is currently operating in the Baltic Sea, working with allies and regional partners to enhance joint operational abilities and promote peace and stability in the Baltic region,” the statement confirmed.

The destroyer will stay in the port city of Gdynia for a few days, its arrival coinciding with strained relations between the Kremlin and Western countries over Russia’s role in the Ukrainian crisis, and fears of a post-Soviet territorial expansion in the region.

The USS Jason Dunham is one of the U.S. Navy’s most sophisticated ships, equipped with SH-60 SeaHawk helicopters, SM-2 surface-to-air missiles and Tomahawk cruise missiles.
