BOGOTA – Two practitioners of traditional medicine in Embera-Chami, a community in the central Colombian province of Caldas, were murdered, the Organization of Indigenous Peoples of the Colombian Amazon, or Opiac, said on Sunday.
Gustavo Bañol Rodriguez and his son, Edwin Bañol Alvarez, were gunned down on Saturday in a rural area outside Anserma, a city about 70 kilometers (43 miles) from Manizales, the capital of Caldas, the Opiac said in a statement.
Bañol Rodriguez, a practitioner of traditional medicine, and his son, who was learning to be a healer, were returning home after taking part in a ceremony with one of the families in their community.
The victims were the father and brother of Norman David Bañol Alvarez, the governor of San Lorenzo, an Indian reservation that is home to about 11,500 people.
The community has asked officials to step up security in the area and investigate the killings.
