Swiss Woman Found Murdered on Guatemalan Beach

GUATEMALA CITY – The body of a Swiss woman was found Sunday on a beach on Guatemala’s Pacific coast bearing knife wounds, emergency authorities said.

Fire Department spokesperson Cecilia Chacaj told Efe that Erika Verena Jenni, 57, was found on the Monterrico beach in Santa Rosa province.

Chacaj added that emergency authorities were alerted by local residents to the presence of a body on the beach.

“Upon arriving at the beach, the lifeless body of a woman of Swiss nationality was found with several wounds caused by a knife,” she said.

Guatemala – along with Honduras and El Salvador – is one of the countries making up Central America’s so-called Northern Triangle, a zone considered to be one of the most violent areas in the world.

A total of 694 women were murdered in Guatemala in 2014, three more than the year before, according to government authorities.
